If you have wood flooring in your home that has some scuffs and needs to be repaired, consider giving it some character during the repair process with decorative staining. Many people think that they have to stain their wood floors one color, but that is not the case at all. It is possible to use different shades of stain on your wood floors to create a unique design that can really give your home a lot of character. Use the guide below to learn how to create a one-of-a-kind look on your hardwood floors.

Sand Down Your Floors

The first thing you will need to do is to rent a floor sander to sand down the entire surface of your wood floors. The sander will remove any small scuffs in the floor and the protective coating on the wood so that you can easily stain it. Be sure to sand in even strokes so that you do not sand one area more than the other areas.

Remove the Dust

Next, you need to sweep your floors thoroughly to remove any dust and debris from them. Be sure to take a clean, damp rag and wipe down the surface of your floor, as well to make sure that there is absolutely no dust left on the surfaces when you start to stain.

Stain the Floors the Lighter Stain Color

You will need to use a light colored floor stain on the floors first to create the background for your design and then a darker stain will be used to create the actual design. Take the lighter stain and pour into a paint pan and then use a roller to roll the stain onto the floor. Be sure to apply the stain evenly to make sure that all of the wood is the same color when you are done. Allow the stain to dry overnight before adding any other stain to the floor.

Choose the Design

Next, you need to choose the design that you want to create on your floor. You can choose a very elaborate design or a very basic design. If you want to choose a basic design, such as stripes on your floor, you can simply use painter's tape to create the outline for the design you want to create. If you want to create a more complex design, draw it on the floor with a pencil before actually applying any dark stain.

Create the Design

Pour the dark floor stain into a paint pan and use a paint brush to apply it to the floor. If you are creating a complex design, use a finer brush and outline the drawing you created and then paint the interior of the outline with the stain to create as crisp of edges as you can. Allow the darker stain to dry overnight and then apply a coating of polyurethane to the entire floor. The polyurethane will protect the floor so that it is not easily damaged.

Once the polyurethane has dried, you can use the room the way that you normally would. Your house will have a very unique look and your floors are sure to be a great conversation starter when guests come to visit.
